ITEM: Royal Doulton sandwich tray. It is part of the Series Ware collection and of course it is English made. This pattern is called "The Cotswold Shepherd", featuring a shepherd, his dog and sheep. DESCRIPTION: The tray is rectangular in shape with a smooth rim.
It has scrolled carrying handles at either end and there is a salmon trim around the rim. The series is described in Louise Irvine's Royal Doulton Series Ware reference books, (Vol 2, Pages 74-76). This scene is Scene 18 (of 20), "Profile view of shepherd with dog following sheep beside tall tree". Note that the photos provided form part of the description. Any shiny spots or white marks are from the camera shots, not blemishes on the item.
Main colours are pastel shades of light green and blue, brown, red, cream and yellow on a cream ground. MEASUREMENTS: 28cms long and 13cms wide, 2.75cms deep. CONDITION: No chips, cracks, restoration or staining. There is fine, all over glaze crazing, mainly noticeable on the back. Has retained a nice glaze shine.
In good vintage condition for its age in my opinion. MARKINGS: The bottom of the tray has a brown Royal Doulton lion and crown back stamp. Also, the pattern registration number, D5561 is hand-written. Also an impressed date, "9.36", manufactured September 1936.
GENERAL COMMENTS: Lovely collectable from a by-gone era. This is a nice piece of Royal Doulton pottery art and this pattern is pretty hard to find in good condition. In good condition and priced to sell.
