7 sets 1930s Brown Bakelite Door Handles lock key hand plate art deco lever knob

  
These seven sets of salvaged bakelite door handles date from the 1930's Art Deco period and are a mottled brown colour. Bakelite handle sets like these would have been fitted to internal wooden doors with mortise locks. Each of the handle sets has two angular back plates (a typical design of the period), with one angular lever handle and a angular knob with a spindle bar. The lever handle and the knob have brass screw-on inserts that hold them to the backplates. The spindle bar goes through the mortise lock in the door and fits into the lever handle and knob, with the backplates being screwed to a wooden door. On the back of each backplate is PERMAX PAT No 398012. The question could be asked, why have both a lever handle and a knob on each handle set and not either both lever handles and knobs? There could be a number of reasons for this. The customer may have wanted the best of both designs, or more likely, the door stops were thicker, and or the mortise locks spindle position was too near the door frame making it difficult to use the larger knob to open the door, so the smaller diameter lever handle was used to overcome this operational problem. The handle sets have signs of wear of a some small chips and scratches, which is to be expected with items of such age, which adds to their character.

The door handle sets measure approximately 204 mm (8") long, 64 mm (2 1/2") wide backplates , the lever handles are 100 mm (3 15/16") long, and knobs 45 mm (1 3/4") square. The distance from the centre of the handle position to the centre of the key hole position is approximately 57 mm (2 1/4). I have used furniture wax to enhance the handle sets. You will need to find some raised head screws with which to attach the backplates to your wooden internal door. These handles can complement both modern or traditional internal doors.
