Vintage Rookwood Pottery Art Deco 2-Handled Cabinet Vase XXVIII 1928 #2558

  

The piece has a beautiful art-deco design with two taller geometric, angular handles upon the bulbous vase. This vase is in excellent condition with no chips, no cracks, no crazing and no repairs. There are, however, minor scratches, scuffs and glaze rubs on the vase from gentle use, along with glaze skips and drips on the piece. If I look closely, I also see miniscule fleabites in the glaze -- so small I note them only for the sake of accuracy. This piece is just under 5" tall, 1-3/4" wide at the mouth, and about 3-1/4 wide at the handles.

The base of the pottery is stamped with the Rookwood Pottery flame mark, the shape number 2558 and the production year XXVIII (1928). The stilt marks are visible. To me, the glaze is really the most interesting part of this piece. This gorgeous glaze is a matte, lighter-blue underglaze with a stunning darker-blue, almost-crystalline overdrip that has traveled down to the base and has been ground flat to make the vase level. There is some light peppering in the glaze, and the crystals in the glaze are most visible at the top rim and right at the bottom of the piece.

The glazes have left certain areas of the mold design outlined, like at the handles, which really accentuate it. And while the overall color of the glazes appears to be a lighter-teal blue, I would say the effect might fall somewhere in the range of cornflower blue to French blue. It's an interesting color! The vase is otherwise relatively clean with some evidence of light mineral staining inside and out. Check out all 9 photos!
