Rare André Sornay Bauhaus Fruitwood Mirrored Tray with Chrome Handles, c1930

  

The chunky angular chrome handles are a signature Sornay detail. Converting the line from classical to modern, Sornay became a leader of the Bauhaus movement and later mid-century modern. Today, Sornay pieces are among the most collectable of the era, and far too expensive for most collectors. This tray features an oval shape with squire ends and a rounder oval inset mirror.

It measures 19 x 11.5 inches. The handles are in the signature Sornay shape (see the photo from a book about André Sornay), which was developed in the mid 1920s.

The fruitwood veneer shows hairline cracks and signs of wear, which you can easily see in the photos. There is no missing veneer. The handles, mirror and back also show signs of wear, consistent with age and use. That said, Sornay pieces are highly collectable, and Sornay accessories are even more rare than his furniture.
